Frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about TruckRules and our courses.

  • What is TruckRules?
TruckRules offers online courses in DOT and FMCSA compliance. Each course explains what the rules require in clear, plain language, so you can manage your own compliance with confidence and know which filings you can handle yourself. Our courses are researched from primary sources: the rules themselves and the agencies that administer them.
  • Do you file applications for me?
No. TruckRules is a training company, not a filing service. Where a course covers an application, such as your USDOT number or operating authority, it walks you through it step by step, so you can complete and submit it yourself.
  • Who are the courses for?
Our courses are written for new carriers, owner-operators, and fleet and safety managers: anyone responsible for compliance, whether for one truck or an entire fleet. No prior experience is required. We start with the fundamentals and build from there.
  • Are the courses useful for dispatchers and freight brokers?
Yes. Our Dispatchers and Broker Authority course is written for dispatchers. It covers where dispatching ends and brokering begins, and when a dispatch service needs broker authority. Freight brokers and others who work with carriers can use our carrier courses to understand what those carriers must have in place.
  • Which course should I take first?

If you are new to compliance, start with the first course below. If you are starting a trucking company, we recommend taking these courses in this order:

    1. Introduction to Trucking Compliance (free)
    2. How to Get Your USDOT Number
    3. Getting Your Operating Authority, if you will haul other people’s freight for pay across state lines
    4. Passing Your New Entrant Safety Audit, to prepare for the audit new interstate carriers must pass in their first year
  • How do the courses work?
Each course is a series of short lessons you complete at your own pace, followed by a final quiz. There are no schedules or live sessions. Every course page lists the course’s modules and lessons, so you can see exactly what it covers before you enroll.
  • Can I take a course on my phone?
Yes. The courses run in any modern web browser on a phone, tablet, or computer, with no app to download. Your progress is saved each time you complete a lesson or submit a quiz, so you can start on one device and continue on another.
  • What if I do not pass the final quiz?
You can retake it as many times as you need, with no penalty. Your result shows the score required to pass, so you can review the lessons and try again whenever you are ready.
  • Will I receive a certificate?
Yes. Every course, including our free introductory course, comes with a Certificate of Completion. When you complete all the lessons and pass the final quiz, you receive a certificate showing your name, the course, and your completion date, which you can download as a PDF and share with employers, brokers, or business partners.
  • How are the courses priced?
Each course is priced individually, and the price is shown on its course page. Our introductory course, Introduction to Trucking Compliance, is free. For every other course you pay once, with no subscription or membership, and all payments are processed securely. You can create an account without a credit card or a DOT number.
  • What happens after I buy a course?
As soon as your payment is confirmed, the course is added to your account and you can start the first lesson right away. Your receipt is available under Purchases in your account.
  • How long will I have access to a course?
Access never expires. Once a course is in your account, it stays there with no subscription, no renewal fee, and nothing to cancel. If we revise a course as the regulations change, the updates are included at no additional cost.
  • Can I buy courses for my drivers or my team?
Yes. Each course purchase covers one person, so everyone takes the course in their own free account and receives a certificate in their own name. If you are buying for three or more people, email info@truckrules.com with the courses you need and the number of people, and we will set it up for you.
  • What is your refund policy?
If you have not started a course, you can request a full refund within 14 days of purchase. A course counts as started once you complete any lesson in it. To request a refund, email info@truckrules.com from the email address on your account with the subject “Refund Request.” Full details are in our Refund Policy.
